Elections 2007:
Greens Make Dramatic Council Gains

The Green Party is becoming a significant force in local politics throughout the UK. In the May 2007 local elections, the Green Party increased its number of councillors by almost 20% to 110.

There were significant gains in some key areas - including Brighton, Norwich and Lancaster.

Lancaster City Council

The Green Party is now the largest party in the city area of Lancaster. They retained 7 seats and gained 5 seats to give a total of 12 councillors.

Liverpool City Council

In a massive swing to the Greens in this year's election, Councillor John Coyne was re-elected as the Green councillor for St Michaels ward.

Brighton and Hove City Council

The Green Party gained 6 seats and now has 12 seats, being the third largest party (Conservatives 26, Labour 13, Green 12, Lib Dem 2, Independent 1)

Norwich Council

The Green Party gained 1 seat and now has 12 councillors.

Scottish Green Party

The Greens have two MSPs in parliament, representing the two largest cities in the country. They are: Patrick Harvie, Green MSP for Glasgow and Robin Harper, top of the Green list in Lothians, in 2003 and 2007.

Robin Harper

In May 2007, The SNP and Scottish Green Party published their Agreement on common action in the new Parliament. The Cooperation Agreement will pursue a progressive programme which puts a commitment to tackling climate change at the heart of its agenda.
The SNP and Green Party have committed themselves to working together to enact early legislation to reduce climate-change pollution each year, and to opposing the building of new nuclear power stations.
