Trident gives voters a clear choice

The vote to renew Trident nuclear weapons presents voters with a clear choice at the ballot box in May. The decision by Wirral's New Labour MPs to renew Trident and spend an estimated £76 billion on weapons of mass destruction will be a huge disappointment to many of the people who have voted Labour in past elections.

The fact that the Government had to rely on the Conservative MPs to make sure Trident was renewed shows how much the two parties now have in common.

Only the Green Party, locally and nationally has called for the abolition of Britains nuclear deterrent in line with our obligations under the nuclear non-proliferation treaty which successive governments have blatantly ignored. Every pound wasted on nuclear weapons is a pound not spent on tackling climate change and energy security, which are the real threats facing the post-Cold War world.

Only the Green Party opposes nuclear weapons in Britain

Janet Laycock of Wallasey CND is spot on with her remarks on the £25 billion replacement for the Trident nuclear weapons system, 'Ask the people', Wirral news, November 16.

However, if Ms Laycock expects a majority of the country's current politicians to hear her call for the system to be scrapped, she is wasting her time. Trident was introduced by a Conservative Government, will to be upgraded by New Labour while the Lib Dems support retention of the current nuclear arsenal.

Only the Green Party has consistently opposed these weapons. We are committed to using the money that would be saved on more worthy causes - public transport, health, education and energy efficiency.

At the next elections, people in Wirral will have a choice - more nuclear power and a replacement nuclear weapons system (with New Labour or the Conservatives) or better public services (with the Green Party).
